If you let that fiery wise blood just sit there in your belly, great granddaughter, admonishes Grandmother Growth, you’ll get the urge to quench that heat. You’ll get a tickle, a twinge, an urgent call. But you won’t have the moisture you need. It’s boiled away. It’s gone up in steam.

So I’ll say it once more circulate your wise blood, granddaughter. Spiral it around and up to your crown. Take action on your anger. Pleasure yourself. And you’ll be one of those old crones, like me, whose eyes sparkle with mirth and flash with intention.

Step 1 Collect Information

Bladder infections are also known as cystitis, urethritis, and UTIs urinary tract infections. When bacteria grow in the bladder, the resulting infection usually causes symptoms such as a burning sensation during voiding, overwhelming urgency, frequent but minuscule urinations, incontinence, bloody urine, and pelvic pain. Up to 25 percent of bladder infections in post- menopausal women are silent or symptomless.

Bacteria enter the bladder in three primary ways when feces are spread to the bladder opening such as wiping from back to front after toileting, when the tube leading to the bladder is irritated or bruised as from use of a diaphragm, pelvic surgery, or prolongedvigorous vaginal penetration, or when there is an in-dwelling catheter.

The thinning and shrinking of reproductive and bladder tissues that may occur in the post- menopausal years contributes to bladder infections in older women, as does lessening of vaginal acidity.

Sometimes tiny ulcerations appear in the wall of the bladder; this is called interstitial cystitis IC. Some of the remedies in this section are contraindicated for women with interstitial cystitis.

These remedies are substantially the same ones that delighted and aided the readers of my first book Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year.

Step 2 Engage the Energy

Flow, flow, flow. Head off that bladder infection by drinking a glass of water hourly as soon as you feel the first urgency or burning. It is tempting to stint on drinking if you find yourself unexpectedly incontinent, but don’t. Bladder infections only make incontinence worse.

Urine is ideally neutral to slightly acidic pH 5.8pH 7. Very acidic urine below pH 5.5 encourages infections. An established infection gives rise to alkaline urine pH 7.5 or higher, which causes stinging and burning. Test your urine with pH paper at any time except first thing in the morning. Cranberry juice lowers pH; vitamin C raises it.

Cantharis is a homeopathic remedy for scalding urine.

Step 3 Nourish and Tonify

Cranberries Vaccinium macrocarpon contain substances that kill bacteria and make your bladder wall so slippery that any escaping bacteria can’t latch on and thrive there. Unsweetened cranberry juice or concentrate is the most effective form. The sugar or corn syrup in cranberry cocktail-type juices and cran-apple juices can feed the infection.

Drink freely, at least a glass a day, up to a quartliter a day for acute infections unless your urine’s pH is already low.

Pelvic floor exercises help prevent and relieve bladder infections too! Try this one After urinating, close your eyes, relax, breathe out, and see if you can squeeze out an extra dribble.

An overgrowth of vaginal yeast may be irritating your bladder or urethra. Eat one cup of plain yogurt 4-5 times a week.

Step 4 StimulateSedate

Uva Ursi Arctostaphylos uva ursi is an old favorite for strengthening the bladder and ending chronic silent bladder infections. I prefer a hot water infusion of the dried leaves, but know women who have successfully used cold water infusions, tinctures, even vinegars. A dose is 1 cup125 ml of infusion; 10-30 drops of tincture; 1 tablespoonful15 ml of vinegar; 36 times a day initially, then 13 times a day for 710 days. In very chronic cases, eliminate all forms of sugar even fresh fruit, fruit juice, and honey for a month as well.

Yarrow is a urinary disinfectant with a powerful antibacterial action and an astringent effect. A small cup of the infusion, once or twice a day for 710 days, tones up weak, lax bladder tissues. Combines well with uva ursi. Results may be felt within hours.

In my experience, Echinacea purpurea and E. augustifolia are as effective as antibiotics in clearing bladder infections and do not contribute to vaginal yeast. See Step 5b. A dose is 1 drop echinacea tincture per 2 pounds1 kilo body weight. For 150 pound70 kilo person, use 75 drops or three dropperfuls. In acute cases, I give the dose every 2 hours. As the infection clears, I lengthen the amount of time between doses until I’m down to 12 doses a day, which I continue for another 210 weeks.

Women who wash their vulva with soap and water are four times more likely to get vaginal and bladder infections. Douches, bubblebaths, tampons, nylon underwear, and pantyhose may also irritate the urethra and contribute to bladder infections.

Known bladder irritants include alcohol, black tea, coffee, sodas, citrus juices, chocolate, cayenne, and hot peppers. An herbal tincture in an alcohol base won’t irritate the bladder if you take it diluted in a glass of water or a cup of herb tea.

Urinating after love play flushes out bacteria and cuts down on UTIs. Urinating before love play increases your risk of a bladder infection.

Step 5a Use Supplements

Ascorbic acid wrings the kidneys, flushes the bladder, and raises urinary pH. Try 500 mg hourly for 68 hours. CAUTION IC sufferers avoid!

Be careful about taking calcium supplements if you are prone to bladder infections. Calcium supplements increase bacterial adherence to the bladder wall, increasing bladder infections.

Step 5b Use Drugs

Antibiotics are the standard medical treatment for women with bladder infections. But taking antibiotics frequently causes vaginal yeast overgrowth which can lead to bladder infection. One nitrofurantoin Macrodantin seems to cause microscopic scarring and ulceration of the bladder wall, precipitating IC.

Step 6 Break and Enter

Dilation of the urethra is expensive, painful, and causes tiny scars on the urethra, which may lead to interstitial cystitis. I have seen it referred to as the rape of the female urethra. No controlled study has shown this procedure to be effective at limiting chronic bladder infections. Do pelvic floor exercises instead.

Cancer of the prostate is typically a slow progressing cancer and symptoms often do not arise for many years. If the cancer is caught at an early stage, there might be no noticeable symptoms. Some men, however, will experience symptoms that could indicate the presence of prostate cancer. These might include

A need for frequent urination, particularly at night
Difficulty starting urination
Weak or interrupted urine flow
Pain or a burning sensation during urination
Difficulty in obtaining an erection
Pain during ejaculation
Blood in the urine or in semen
Recurring pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs

Sometimes the first symptoms will be lower back, hip or pelvic pain caused by cancer which has already spread.

It is important to be aware that the symptoms of both benign enlargement of the prostate gland i.e. non-cancerous and malignant tumours cancer are similar and might include any of the following symptoms

Difficulty starting urination
Frequent urination, particularly at night
Pain during urination
Blood in the urine

Also, men over 50 years of age often have an enlarged prostate gland due to the non-cancerous condition of benign prostatic hyperplasia BPH, or hypertrophy.

Therefore if you notice any of the above symptoms it is important that you see your doctor and have them investigated. But note that most enlargements of the prostate are not due to cancer and can regularly be dealt with quite effectively.

EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF PROSTATE CANCER

Prostate cancer can often be discovered at an early stage by testing the amount of prostate specific antigen PSA in the blood. Prostate cancer can also be detected early by your doctor performing a digital rectal examination DRE. Since the prostate gland is situated close to the rectum, a doctor can physically detect if there are any cancerous signs in your prostate.

Unfortunately the PSA and DRE tests are not totally accurate and conclusive. This can lead to anxiety and confusion, or even to a false sense of security. So important things to consider are your age, your general health and your lifestyle. If you are young and develop prostate cancer, if not caught early enough, it could shorten your life. If however you are older or in poor health, then prostate cancer might never become a serious problem due to its slow-growing nature.

The American Cancer Society recommends that men commence having the prostate specific antigen PSA blood test and digital rectal examination DRE annually from the age of 50. Those at higher risk, such as African Americans and those with close relatives who developed prostate cancer at an early age are recommended to commence testing at 45.

The prognosis for prostate cancer sufferers has improved dramatically in recent years. In the past twenty years the overall survival rate for all stages of prostate cancer has increased from 67 to 97. Thus more men are living significantly longer after diagnosis. In all likelihood this is due to early detection programs, increased public awareness, particularly of prostate cancer symptoms, and the adoption of healthier lifestyles.

My all-time favorite TV commercial was that old Wendy’s ad. The setting is The Home of the Big Bun; the customer reminds us of Granny from The Beverly Hillbillies. As Granny opens the lid of an over-sized hamburger bun, she discovers an unsettling surprise… a teensy-weensy, itty-bitty patty of beef. Mad as a hornet with P.M.S., she cackles the now-famous slogan

“Where’s the Beef?”

“Where’s the Beef?” soon became a catchphrase in the arena of verbal combat. I still chuckle whenever I think back to an infamous moment during the 1984 presidential primaries. Walter Mondale separated himself from underdog Colorado Senator Gary Hart with a little humor.

Mondale borrowed the phrase “Where’s the Beef?” to criticize Harts lack of depth in policy statements. Everyone knew exactly what he meant. Those three powerful words cut swiftly and poignantly to the proverbial chase! Suddenly, Harts pompous pontifications were stripped of their aurora of omniscient omnipotence and simultaneously exposed as frivolous fluff. Reminiscent of the scene from The Wizard of Oz, the curtains parted and the spotlight shifted to an emperor who had no clothes.

Okay, so Mondale didn’t beat Reagan. But that’s another story.

My point is and I do have one, although our supermarket shelves are stocked with a wide array of fancy foodstuffs in pretty packages, and even though your gleeful kiddies may make you feel like parent-of-the-month as you reward their consumption of Happy Meals with cool cartoon figurines, remember All that glitters ain’t gold! Unless consumers become vigilantly alert, the food industry will continue to crank out an endless entourage of pre-packaged, foodless foods.

Does A Foodless Food Syndrome Really Exist?

My guess is, most people aren’t fully persuaded that a foodless food syndrome really exists. Or if this so-called syndrome does exist, it can’t possibly be all that serious, right? Granted, many people continuously feel sick and tired, but that’s natural, right? Though many people are sick and tired, most are simply not sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Furthermore, we fail to connect the dots. Sure, we’ve heard the reports. But Sixty percent of Americans are overweight! is no longer a newsflash. Complacent to reality, we tempt fate and continue to Super-size our fries. Sure, seventeen million Americans suffer from diabetes, but another gulp of soda pop couldn’t hurt. And so what if over 40 percent of the US population will die of a heart attack? I’m not giving up my cholesterol-rich diet. Forget about the fact that there is now irrefutable evidence that high cholesterol levels are associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease. Forget about the fact that there is a direct relationship established between high cholesterol levels and high rates of heart attacks. Surely it’s just a coincidence that the high US death toll from heart failure corresponds with the high cholesterol level in The United States.

On the flip side of the coin, is it just a coincident that populations with much lower cholesterol levels also have much lower death tolls? Consider rural China, where the average cholesterol level is almost half that of the American cholesterol level. Less than five percent of their population dies from heart attacks. Hmm. Forty percent verses five percent is a HUMONGOUS difference, dont you think? Oh well, maybe that too is just a coincidence.

And so what if The World Health Organization tells us yet another time that cancer is a leading cause of death? Who cares if an estimated 7.6 million people died of cancer in 2005? Its no longer shocking to learn that 84 million people will die in the next 10 years if action is not taken. Besides, what, in bloody blazes, does all this have to do with poor nutrition?

Everything. Numerous experts echo the alarm of the American Cancer Society, “Eating right, being active, and maintaining a healthy weight are important ways to reduce your risk of cancer – as well as heart disease and diabetes.”

The Problem with Processed Food

So why am I picking on the processed food industry? Here’s the problem in a nutshell.

First, we produce way more food than what is necessary for our consumption, which creates a surplus. So this surplus food needs to be highly refined and processed, otherwise it will spoil. During this process, essential vitamins and minerals are annihilated. The result is, foodless foods are being produced in massive quantities. These food products retain most of their calories, but they have little, if any, nutritional value.

These foodless foods do not nutritionally support your body properly to allow for the normal repair and growth of your tissues and cells. In fact, refined foods are so depleted that the government has laws which require artificial vitamins and minerals to be added in order to meet minimum standards. The very reason why foods are labeled “enriched” or “fortified” is because their natural nutrients have been robbed! As a consequence, over sixty percent of the typical American diet consists of refined foods and snacks.

The Importance of A Healthy Diet and Diet Supplementation

So what’s the solution?

The first step is to eat a healthy diet consisting largely of raw fruits and vegetables, preferably organic. Avoid refined sugar and processed bread. Instead, substitute natural sweeteners like honey. Also, eat whole-grain bread.

But lets face it were not living in the Garden of Eden. Life is a rat race and were in the fast lane. It can be cumbersome with our fast-paced lifestyles to get all the essential vitamins and minerals we need by relying on our diets alone. That’s why it is critically important to supplement your diet with a great high-quality All-Natural Multi-Vitamin made from Whole-Food sources. Unlike cheap synthetics, Whole-Food Vitamins are the greatest in the world when it comes to nutritionally supporting your body. Plus, they are much better utilized and absorbed by your bodys individual cells.

Theres the Beef!

Glyconutrients, are 100 vegetarian based derived entirely from plants & seaweeds. They combine aloe based saccharides with fucose-rich Undaria pinnatifida. They are Gluten Free; and usually contain arabinogalactan. Arabinogalactan has shown some immune-enhancing activity in the laboratory, particularly with regard to the stimulation of human natural killer cell cytotoxicity.

Glyconutrient products are specifically designed to enhance cellular communication. True wellness begins at the cellular level. Think about it? If your body is made up of millions and billions of cells that need to talk to each other, wouldn’t it do its job better if the communication was better? Glyconutrients have amazing research behind them.

Glyconutrients are typically, sold in a bulk powder, capsule, or liquid medium. I have chosen to only discuss the dosages for bulk powder and capsules, because I believe that liquid supplementations are subject to oxygen and free radical contamination and should NOT be consumed.

Bulk Powder Recommended Use
One scoop 12 teaspon twice daily mixed with your favorite juice, tea, or water. In trials, the glyconutrient powder has been proven to be safe, & non-toxic, with no known side effects up to at least 60 scoops per day.

Capsule Recommended Use
Two capsules twice daily on an empty or full stomach taken with a full glass of water. In trials, Glyconutrient capsules have been proven to be safe, & non-toxic, with no known side effects. up to 20 capsules per day.

There is an excellent book on the market entitled ‘In Search of Manna’. You can buy it at www.amazon.com. It contains doctor recommendations for ‘emergency’ dosages of glyconutrients based on specific auto immune disorders. The recommendations based above are for maintenace dosages or healthy people that want to maintain good health.

I recently read a lengthy article on Glyconutrients. The author of the article who shall remain nameless, incorrectly and falsely made statements about glyconutrients and cures. If you or a loved one are suffering from an auto-immune disorder, please read this article before randomly buying a product off the internet.

Don’t get me wrong. I am a huge proponent of glyconutrients. However, people need to be informed and educated before they start buying nutritional products.

The reality is that glyconutrients are GREAT; and they seriously help people that have compromised immune systems. Glyconutrients have the ability to feed our body at the cellular level. The end result of this is that your body acts and responds more efficiently. This means your body will naturally fight off and address current illnesses and ailments BETTER than if you did not take glyconutrients.

At this point in the research with glyconutrients, it is INCORRECT to make statements that glyconutrients heal. However, the research is far enough along that people who are battling auto immune disorders should SERIOUSLY consider taking glyconutrients.

My other beef with glyconutrient advertising is that it is NOT a silver bullet. There are many good things everybody should be doing for their bodies on a daily basis. These things are even more important when you are fighting a major autoimmune disorder.

For example, everybody should be doing the following

Taking a good multivitamin

Drinking eight classes of water a day, preferably distilled.

Taking Co-enzyme Q10 and Alpha Lipoic Acid

Taking Priobiotics

Taking a high quality Vitamin C

Think about this. When your body is under stress; and it is failing to fight off a disease properly, wouldn’t you want to give your body all the raw materials it needs to assist in the healing process? Glyconutrients are one MAJOR step in this process; but they are not the entire process.

There are two very good websites on the internet that discuss and sell multi-vitamins and glyconutrients.

First, we must settle one of two issues before you continue reading this article. The first issue is straight forward, a “direct-punch-to-the-nose” kind of a question

Do you believe cancer is “beatable?”
I don’t mean, “Sometime in the future…”
I think everyone believes “some day”, “somewhere”, “someone” will discover the cure.

Nor do I mean anything like, “Is cancer treatable where people temporarily overcome the disease through the burning of radiation, the surgeon’s knife or the necessarily toxic effects of chemotherapy?”
That we all know is possible….

No, my question is far more specific
In your opinion, is Cancer… Curable…Stoppable …Conquerable… Whatever synonym you supply, the question remains…Is it or isn’t it defeatable?
Yes or no. Can we whip this thing?

…Because if, in your heart of hearts, you believe Cancer is NOT ‘defeatable’… there’s no sense in continuing this letter.
However, if you’re like me, you believe it’s certainly defeatable. Now the only question that remains

Is Cancer NOW facing REAL defeat?

Since we all have a healthy fear of being “sold” the next bottle of snake oil, we need to establish that the claims being made are credible and reliable. Incidentally, I am NOT selling you anything in this letter. I believe you should consider a product or two…but not here.

So, let’s deal with cancer

”	According to the American Cancer Society, “cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. If the spread is not controlled, it can result in death.”
”	Cancers tend to metastasize spread over time, causing destruction of healthy tissue and damage to bodily functions…
”	If left unchecked, cancers can cause death. However, even the treatments for cancer can be destructive to healthy tissues and can do severe damage to bodily functions side effects…
”	Over the past 100 years, cancers have grown into epidemic proportions without any scientific explanation for the sudden surge in their appearance. Remember, cancer was once comparatively RARE.
”	BUT, scientists have now concluded cancer is fundamentally a breakdown of the immune system. As the immune system goes, so goes the cancer. That fact is the new approach …and it has a whole world of scientific evidence behind it.

Consider carefully

Changing Cancer Cells’ Surface Sugars Can Inhibit Tumor Growth

“According to the research of scientists, as published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, altering the sugar coats of cancer cells can control cancer.”
published in the Scientific American, Jan. 22, 2002

In other words, “sugar” is a BIG issue in the medical, alternative, and complementary health world. The words “Glycomics” and “Glyconutrition” have sprung up in the vocabulary of health authorities around the world. Glyco is the Greek word for “sugar.”. These sciences refer to the study of biological sugars. What makes these “sugars” so important is among the over 200 known sugars around the world, there are 8 sugars which medical research has isolated as VITAL to human immune system functioning.

The 1999 Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to Dr. Gunter Blobel for his work in the science of Glycobiology. Out of the last eight Nobel Prizes awarded in medicine, four Nobel Prizes have been awarded for discoveries made in ONE fieldGlycobiology. This is the field that affects CANCER directly. Why? Because, 8 sugars have been isolated that strengthen the immune system and cell communication. Human life cannot be supported without them.

The field is glyconutrition. Glyconutrients are NOT vitamins, amino acids or minerals. Scientifically, glyconutrients are a class all by themselves. The field is revolutionizing the medical world. For the first time in a long time, many authorities in both the conventional medical world and those of the alternative world are in agreement. Powerful glyconutrients have already been included in the Physicians Desk Reference post 2002, the “Bible” of physicians everywhere throughout the country.

Why? Consider
Four Ways Glyconutrients Fight Cancers
1.	Macrophage and Immune killer cells are stimulated by glyconutritional supplementation to destroy malignancies.
2.	Glyconutrional research shows that glyconutrients increase the production of substances in the body that target cancer cells for destruction, such as interferon.
3.	Glyconutrients activate T-cells to recognize and destroy invasive and abnormal cells.
4.	Glyconutrients help regulate the process of apoptosis- the natural “dying off” process in cellular systems.

If these processes are restrained – due to a variety of factors such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, poor glyconutritional dietary habits, etc., the body will fail to prevent the onset of cancer.
Cited in Miracle Sugars, Rita Elkins, M.H., Woodland Publishing, p. 29
Note How the Scientific World is Successfully Combating Cancer with the New Discoveries in Glycoscience

The revolutionary “glyconutrition” discoveries found over the past decade have stunned the scientific world. If that sounds “more hype than hope” you might want to take just a few moments to consider just a few developments
In 1985, an issue of Cancer Research reported the formation of cancer cells in the colon and in the stomach was directly and UNMISTAKENLY related to the absence of glyconutrition or the presence of deformed sugar molecules. Since then, scientists at the University of South Florida believe confirmation of the glyconutritional linkage to cancer inhibition and its spread is profound. For example, according to the 1997 issue of Anticancer Research science periodical, glyconutrition decreases the number of liver tumors.

In addition,
“Dr. Ronald Klatz reported in the now incredibly famous medical research study nicknamed “Norman’s Rats”, 40 of the animals that had no defense whatsoever against cancer and were injected with just ONE of the eight essential glyconutritionals, showed “tumor regression and complete recovery.”

- Advances in Anti-Aging Medicine, Vol. 1, 1996 by Dr. Ronald Klatz.
Obviously, YOU and I must find out about Glyconutritionfor the sake of our health and for those we love.

It is for that reason, and that reason alone, I have written this open letter

How Do I Prepare Golden Flaxseeds?
Golden flax can be purchased whole, ground and in oil form. We recommend that you obtain golden flax seeds in the whole seed form. provides the highest nutrional value. We recommend that you grind a portion of your golden flax seeds as needed. The golden flax seeds can be ground into a coarse powder form using a coffee grinder or electric flax grinder. Uncrushed flax seeds will not be digested and will thus pass through you undigested.

Some of the Undisputed Benefits of Flaxseed Includes

1. Better regulation of blood sugar levels
2. Eases inflammatory tissue conditions, including arthritis
3. Alleviation of dry skin, eczema and psoriasis
4. Enhanced immune system
5. Increased metabolic rate with a positive impact on weight management
6. Helps with Attention Deficit Disorder ADD
7. Natural laxative

What the Medics Says
Medical researchers in New Zealand provide convincing evidence that an increased consumption of fish oils helps reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer.

What can I do with Whole Flaxseeds?
The small, golden flax seeds add nutrition when added to bread doughs, pancake, muffin or cookie mixes. When sprinkled on top of any of these before baking, they also add crunch and taste.

We feel golden flaxseed can be an easy and extremely beneficial addition to everyones diet. Flax seed, also known as linseed, is noted to have high nutritional value, making it a priority choice of food for health conscious people.

Flaxseed is the latest craze to take over Hollywood and is credited with improving hair, skin and nail quality, aiding weight loss, and preventing diseases such as arthritis, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Unlike other Hollywood health fads, it wont break the bank.

If you want a cure for cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer, or diabetes, don’t count on the academia, the National Institute of Health NIH, or the biotechpharmaceutical industry. With all the money they have spent on researching these diseases, they have very little to show for it.

In 1971, during the State of the Union address, President Nixon declared the war on cancer proposing “an intensive campaign to find a cure for cancer.” Since 1971, Americans spent, through taxes, donations, and private R&D, about 200 billion in inflation-adjusted dollars. This money produced 1.56 million papers on cancer. Yet, today we are no closer to a cure than we were in 1971. Why?

Consider what Dr. Almog said in his paper Drug Industry in “depression” Almog, D. Drug industry in “depression”. Med Sci Monit. 2005 Jan;111SR1-4, I would urge you to read his paper, it’s an eye opener on relationship between academic research and commercial drug discovery “When the basic sciencebiology of disease is not available, no new drugs come to market.” With the billion of dollars spent by the NIH on basic science, and the millions of papers published on the topic, the question is, “Why isnt the basic sciencebiology of disease available? Individual discoveries in the biology of human disease are cornerstone in new treatments. However, in drug discovery, these basic sciencebiology discoveries are seemingly unrelated dots. To connect the dots you need a theory. The Blind Men and the Elephant is a famous story about six blind men encountering an elephant for the first time. Each man, seizing on the single feature of the animal, which he appeared to have touched first, and being incapable of seeing it whole, loudly maintained his limited opinion on the nature of the beast. The elephant was considered a wall, a spear, a snake, a tree, a fan or a rope, depending on whether the blind men had first grasped the creatures side, tusk, trunk, knee, ear or tail. The story epitomizes the problem of the reductionist approach in biology. A recent book Microcompetition with Foreign DNA and the Origin of Chronic Disease, by Hanan Polansky 11, presents an alternative. The book identifies the disruption that causes atherosclerosis, cancer, obesity, osteoarthritis, type II diabetes, alopecia, type I diabetes, multiple sclerosis, asthma, lupus, thyroiditis, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, graft versus host disease, and other chronic diseases, and describes the sequence of events that leads from the disruption to the molecular, cellular, and clinical effects.”

What are the implications of the NIH failure? A decline in the number of new drugs introduced by pharmaceutical companies. Consider what professor Taylor says in his paper Fewer new drugs from the pharmaceutical industry Taylor D. Fewer new drugs from the pharmaceutical industry. BMJ. 2003 Feb 22;3267386408-9 “In 2002 spending on medicines exceeded 400bn 248bn; 377bn worldwide. Optimists in the pharmaceutical industry believe that the global market for their products will go on expanding by around 10 a year, with the United States continuing to lead towards higher per capita outlays. Expenditure on research by the pharmaceutical industry is also increasing worldwide. It is now over 45bn a year—twice the sum recorded at the start of the 1990s—and projected to rise to 55bn by 2005-6. Concerns are growing, however, about the productivity of research being funded by the major pharmaceutical companies. … Empirical evidence indicates a crisis in productivity in pharmaceutical research. The number of medicines introduced worldwide that contain new active ingredients dropped from an average of over 60 a year in the late 1980s to 52 in 1991 and only 31 in 2001. The overall number of new active substances undergoing regulatory review is still falling.”

On the one hand, the expenditure on research is increasing. On the other, the number of new drugs is decreasing. The professionals call this situation the productivity crisis in drug discovery.

The NIH failed to produce the so much needed biology of chronic disease because it is caught in the reductionist mentality. Dr. Hanan Polansky offers an alternative. If we want a cure for cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer, or diabetes, we need to seriously consider his alternative.

I know most of us area already well aware of what antioxidants are, and the benefits it has on our health in general. However, few of us actually know the sources of antioxidants. Our standard meal does not always provide the sufficient antioxidants our body needs to maintain optimum health. This article will show you exactly where these super high concentrated antioxidants are in our everyday food!

Quick into on the benefits of Antioxidants
Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radical damage may lead to cancer. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage free radicals otherwise might cause. Examples of antioxidants include beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamins C, E, and A, and other substances.

Fruits and Vegetables Great source of Antioxidants!
Antioxidants are abundant in fruits and vegetables, as well as in other foods including nuts, grains and some meats, poultry and fish. The list below describes food sources of common antioxidants.

Beta-carotene is found in many foods that are orange in color, including sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, squash, apricots, pumpkin, and mangos. Some green leafy vegetables including collard greens, spinach, and kale are also rich in beta-carotene.

Lutein, best known for its association with healthy eyes, is abundant in green, leafy vegetables such as collard greens, spinach, and kale.

Lycopene is a potent antioxidant found in tomatoes, watermelon, guava, papaya, apricots, pink grapefruit, blood oranges, and other foods. Estimates suggest 85 percent of American dietary intake of lycopene comes from tomatoes and tomato products.

Selenium is a mineral, not an antioxidant nutrient. However, it is a component of antioxidant enzymes. Plant foods like rice and wheat are the major dietary sources of selenium in most countries. The amount of selenium in soil, which varies by region, determines the amount of selenium in the foods grown in that soil. Animals that eat grains or plants grown in selenium-rich soil have higher levels of selenium in their muscle. In the United States, meats and bread are common sources of dietary selenium. Brazil nuts also contain large quantities of selenium.

Antioxidants are in Vitamins too! Supplement your diet!
Vitamin A is found in three main forms retinol Vitamin A1, 3,4-didehydroretinol Vitamin A2, and 3-hydroxy-retinol Vitamin A3. Foods rich in vitamin A include liver, sweet potatoes, carrots, milk, egg yolks and mozzarella cheese.

Vitamin C is also called ascorbic acid, and can be found in high abundance in many fruits and vegetables and is also found in cereals, beef, poultry and fish.

Vitamin E, also known as alpha-tocopherol, is found in almonds, in many oils including wheat germ, safflower, corn and soybean oils, and also found in mangos, nuts, broccoli and other foods.

Like any other food, we cannot overdo, or overeat what we think is healthy. Take the moderate path! It is advisible to eat all natural fruits and vegetables, and at the same time take a few supplements to ensure our body gets the essential antioxidants it needs to maintain optimum health levels! Live life to the fullest today!

The flax plant, an ancient crop, yields the fibre from which linen is woven, as well as seeds linseed or flaxseed and oil. The oil, also called linseed oil, has many industrial uses – it is an important ingredient in paints, varnishes and linoleum for example.

Like olive, canola, and most other plant oils, flax seed oil is highly unsaturated and heart-healthy. Lignans and other flax seed components may also have antioxidant properties, which means they may reduce the activity of cell-damaging free radicals.

Recently small studies of cancer patients who consumed flaxseeds have produced some encouraging results.

In one study men with prostate cancer who ate an ounce of ground flaxseeds almost three tablespoons a day as part of a very-low-fat diet were able to slow the progress of their cancers between the time they were diagnosed and the time of surgery. A similar study of women awaiting surgery for breast cancer found that those who ate a flaxseed muffin daily with about four tablespoons of ground flaxseeds per muffin had a slower tumor growth rate. Studies of animals, too, suggest some anti-cancer benefit from flaxseed. But it’s always difficult to know whether it’s the lignans that help, or some other element in the flaxseeds. And not all studies have yielded positive results.

Besides lignans, flaxseeds and their oil are also the best food sources of an essential fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid. “Essential” means we must consume it, because our bodies cannot manufacture it. Essential fatty acids are important for cell membranes, blood pressure regulation, and other functions. Alpha-linolenic acid is an omega-3, similar to some of the fatty acids in fish oil. Like aspirin, omega-3s may reduce blood clotting, thus lessening the chance of a fatal heart attack.

Flaxseeds and their oil may also lower total blood cholesterol, as well as LDL “bad” cholesterol.

But that should come as no big surprise, since any highly unsaturated oil will do that, particularly if substituted for saturated fats. The fiber in flaxseeds may also help against cholesterol, since it is soluble similar to that in oats.
