Asthma is an inflammatory condition where your bronchiales constrict causing breathing difficulties. Your bronchioles become inflamed for a variety of physical, emotional and environmental reasons. It is not contagious so, you cannot catch it from another person.

But what is the real cause asthma? Why do some people develop asthma and why is asthma more common in the western world?

Inheriting Asthma

However, you can inherit the asthma tendency from your parents, although people with asthma should not worry about their future children on this score.

Studies show that children whose parents smoke are twice as likely to develop asthma as children of non-smoking parents. Also, children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy tend to be born with smaller airways, which greatly increases their chances of developing the disease.

The “westernised” environment and lifestyle in developed countries has a lot to do with the chances of whether a person will develop asthma or not.

Many people believe air pollution has something to do with asthma, although the evidence, at this stage, is surprisingly very weak.

Allergies

Causes of asthma include allergies to house dust mites, cats, dogs, and moulds.

Childhood infections and exposure to substances from bacteria in a dirty environment seem to protect against allergies, and this seems to be the main reason why richer populations have more allergic disease.

So the causes of asthma are complicated. They include genetics, exposure to chemical irritants and pollution, a low immune system, emotional or mental problems, allergies to certain foods.

Almost all asthma in young people is cause by allergies. This means that if you have asthma you probably have inherited genes which make it possible for you to get asthma. Add to this, allergy-producing things in your environment, such as house dust mites, cats, or dog and your asthma get worse.. The allergies and the genes are the causes for developing asthma, because if either of them were not present you would not developed asthma.

But, what about colds, exercise, laughter, or tobacco smoke, which are asthma triggers?

You can’t cure your asthma by not doing exercise, or by not laughing. Quite simply, these are not causes of asthma, though they can be causes of an attack.

The type of interior house paint can apparently make asthma worse. Glossy oil paints used for home decorating can bring on asthma attacks. The good news is that emulsion paints don’t seem to do this.

Polyurethane paints, usually recognisable because they come in two packs which need to be mixed together before use, can cause occupational asthma in people who use them regularly. However, they probably cause no great risk in people with asthma who use them infrequently. As always, when using chemicals and paints, it is surely a good idea to ventilate the area well during and after use.

Emotional issues

Now, deep seated emotionally issue can be the cause of asthma. When emotion is embedded into the body, it has to express itself in a way that its electrical charge can be released. This release happens over and over as outside situations trigger the memory.

The way an embedded emotion issue choses to express itself is by the path of least resistance. If your heart is weak, the emotional issue will pound your heart. If your joints are weak, it will pound your joints. If your bronchia or lungs are weak, it will pound them and eventually weaken those more, leading you to asthma or other respiratory diseases.

Early on everyone should be aware of their family illness history. This is something that is seldom considered. If it were, you could take preventative measures if you knew you were prone to asthma. Choosing the right foods and keeping specific body organs or systems strong, with the right nutrients early on, would definitely prevent you from having to suffer with asthma as you became older.

It is very important to choose an experienced LASIK surgeon in order to make sure that your Lasik eye surgery is done effectively and with the correct safe guards, remember it is your eyes if anything goes wrong. Quite often Lasik eye surgery centers that are offering discounts attract a lot of patients, but beware of such centers because sometimes they may try to hide the actual cost and just display the charge for part of the procedure. After getting your surgery, you might find that there are a lot of other additional charges such as for consultations, follow-up care, etc. As a result of this your total bill could well exceed the amount that an honest well-experienced Lasik surgeon would have charged in the first place!

In this article, I have listed a few points that you should consider when it comes to the cost of Lasik eye surgery.

1.Do not get caught by the non-refundable deposit gimmick. These are nothing more than a ploy to get you hooked. If you do pay before hand you may find it is really a fee to learn the details of the surgery that the Lasik eye surgery center offers. It doesn’t matter if you find out later that the center is not a good one, they have got your money and if you decide not to go ahead with the surgery there is no refund. Always remember that reputable Lasik eye surgery centers will never ask for any fee to give you the necessary details about their procedures and practices.

2.You must make sure that the advertised cost is for the entire procedure including all preparation and after care. The cost must not be only for a part of procedure. Otherwise you might find that the actual bill will be a much higher amount than you were quoted.

3.You must make sure that the low cost of Lasik eye surgery being advertised covers the follow-up care as well. The follow-up care visits shouldn’t be restricted to just one or two. It should also include any problem that might arise following the surgery.

4.Also make sure that the low price includes all the necessary medical care for up to one year after your surgery. If any additional fees are charged then make sure you are aware of what they will be.

The overall cost of Lasik surgery is reasonable and is falling as more people have this type of eye surgery. Rather than going to the discount surgeries it is always recommended that you go to a reputable eye surgeon in order to get the best results.

Don’t worry, you will not be overcharged, also most surgeons now have payment plans available to fit even the most restricted budget.

Sometimes you come across a quote or saying, and you think, gosh so true, I will remember that. Maybe those words give you a gentle push in the right direction or the ever necessary “reality check.”

Here to share with you are some of life’s quotes that are especially powerful for smokers to help quit smoking.

“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” Dolly Parton
Thus as an analogy for quitting smoking – run through the rainy bits, mind the potholes and keep your eye on the road ahead, and you’ll reach your goal.

“It is not how many years we live, but what we do with them.” Evangeline Booth
If some die-hard smoker scoffs at you, “you’ve got to die of something,” remember you don’t need sad fatalists to help quit smoking, you want to enjoy your life free of guilt and worry. Winners take action, losers just criticize.

“I just need enough to tide me over until I need more!” Anonymous
This quote is really about money, but could easily be about the addictive nicotine habit. Same old niggle about whether you’ve got some, how it controls you, each hit only relieves you until the next smoke so the satisfaction is only temporary, always on your mind like a dragon on your back.

“Originality is not doing something no one else has ever done, but doing what has been done countless times with new life, new breath.” Marie Chapian
Waiting for that magic pill to help quit smoking? Instead use your own unique mind and will. Experience a rush of pride as you prove to yourself and those near and dear to you what you’re made of.

“Some people believe holding on and hanging in there are signs of great strength. However, there are times when it takes much more strength to know when to let go and then do it.” Ann Landers
The reasons you started smoking are probably not around anymore. You don’t need to act cool, be swayed by peer pressure, cope with teen emotions, or do what grown-ups or stars do. All those things were false and it’s just nicotine and habit that’s holding you to ransom now.

“It’s never too late – in fiction or in life – to revise.” Nancy Thayer
To help quit smoking, what about turning your thinking around and looking at all the amazing gains of being smoke-free rather than what you fear you are losing when you quit. As a smoker you lose money, health, time and respect – and hey, that’s exactly what you gain as a non-smoker!

“Health is not everything, but without health, everything else is nothing.” Anonymous
It’s hard to watch a smoker die; lung cancer is one of the worst. As that human being battles his or her pain and regrets, sometimes 20 or more years before a normal lifespan, all other hopes, dreams, achievements and possessions are now meaningless. You know it’s never too late to aim to die happy.

“Don’t mistake pleasure for happiness. They are a different breed of dogs.” Josh Billings
True happiness is, to use another quote, “When all the wheels of your supermarket trolley go in the same direction.” The feeling when you can wake up each morning knowing you are doing the best for yourself that you can possibly do – and thus for the world. There’s nothing wrong with temporary pleasures, as long as you control them, not the other way around.

“Pain is temporary. Quitting is forever.” Anonymous
Possibly Lance Armstrong said this to do with cycling. But it’s a great quote to help quit smoking, because exactly as it’s written, if you follow it, it is 100 true.

“Self-love is the key to all ills.” Anonymous
Great words, great truth! And it brings a trust in yourself that you now have the answers. Now check do you truly love yourself? Loving yourself is not just saying the words “I love myself” but it’s the demonstration of that love and how it manifests in your daily life. Self-love means sometimes making the tough, unpopular and unfavorable decisions to get the ultimate happiness in life.

“May the best of your yesterdays be the worst of your tomorrows.” Anonymous
An appropriate final quote to help quit smoking, because you will feel so good when you are free of your addiction – just ask any ex-smoker.

Herpes Simplex-What Is It?

Herpes simplex is a skin problem that is caused by a virus. The virus can be of two types- virus type1 and virus type2. With virus type1, you will get herpes mainly on your face. With virus type2, you will get herpes mainly on your genitals. Those who are sexually active may be unknowingly passing this disease to you and this is incurable. Find out more.

Herpes Simplex Types -

Let us talk more about virus type2. It causes sores, muscle aches, fevers and difficult urinations. The problem is this. Those who have herpes go in to dormant mode after getting treated. That means that their body will give no outward sign that they have herpes. If you get into relation with them, the virus will most probably will be passed on to you. Now you are a carrier of herpes for life. You will never get cured. You may have herpes outbreaks anytime on your genitals and that will be very painful. It will take about two weeks to get it cleared. After that the virus may cause active herpes anytime in future.

Protection From Herpes Simplex-

If your partner has dormant herpes simplex and does not tell you herselfhimself, you will most probably get it. The best way out is to enquire with your partner if heshe has had any episodes of Herpes virus type2. Even if they had an outbreak in the childhood of herpes virus type1, please find out. That will also form active blisters on your face mainly lips and be with you for life.

When we think of a chili pepper, we imagine it in adding its distinctive spiciness to food. But how about in a pain relief cream? Strange as it may sound, chili peppers have traditionally been used as a topical painkiller, usually made by crushing the fruit and mixing it with a neutral base or applying the pulp directly to the skin. A modern version of this is the capsaicin pain relief cream available in tubes or jars or as the active ingredient in heating pads for sale at most drugstores. Among the conditions it is used for are back pain, bursitis, fibromyalgia, joint pain, muscle pain, nerve pain, osteoarthritis, pain due to diabetes, neuropathy, phantom pain after amputation, post-herpetic neuralgia, post-surgical neuropathic pain, and rheumatoid arthritis. It can also relieve itching pruritis.

But what is it about capsaicin that makes it so effective in relieving pain? The answer lies in its distinctive mouth-burning, eye-watering, and sweat-breaking spiciness. Capsaicin or 8-methyl N-vanillyl 6nonamide is one of the six capsaicinoid compounds in chili peppers. It works by activating the chemical terminals of sensory neurons called transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 TRPV1, which increases membrane permeability to elements like calcium and sodium. This triggers the release of substance P, which is primarily responsible for the sensations of pain we experience inside our mouths when eating a habanero chili pepper. When these chemical terminals are flooded with capsaicin, they open and allow the latter to enter specific pain fibers, letting extra calcium inside the cells until the nerves become overloaded and shut down. When these cells shut down, it temporarily numbs the feeling in that specific area where it was applied.

The brain responds to the burning sensation by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller.

Endorphins are a class of neurotransmitters produced by the body to respond to any kind of pain, and bonds to some of the same receptors in the brain as the opioid morphine. The term itself is a blend of two words coined by American scientists Rabi Simantov and Solomon H. Snyder, endogenous and morphine” and literally means “morphine produced naturally in the body. Endorphins are also known to cause a sense of well-being, and is the attributed cause of a phenomenon called runner’s high. This is largely because its release is triggered by exercise, which puts a great deal of wear and tear on the body and causing muscle pain. The muscle pain in turn becomes the signal for the body to release endorphins. Similarly, capsaicin has also been known to trigger the release of endorphins.

While some studies suggest that it is only effective in a percentage of actual users, capsaicin pain relief creams give patients an alternative to taking oral medications to manage their pain. Although it is associated with certain side effects, specifically a mild to moderate stinging or burning sensation, these diminish with frequent use. However, this treatment option is worth a try.

Aside from being mega-rich and famous, what do David Beckham and Leonardo di Caprio have in common? Both suffer from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder OCD, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by an obsessive or distressing thought. It may also involve compulsions or rituals. It is such a serious concern that event the World Health Organization has labeled OCD as among the top 10 most disabling illnesses faced by society today. In the United States alone, it is estimated that 3.3 million people are suffering from OCD.

The football superstar David Beckham once said in an interview that he had been struggling for years with OCD. He said that he was obsessed with getting everything in a straight line or having objects in pairs. He revealed that every time he went to a hotel, he had to keep all leaflets and books inside a cabinet before he can relax. The multi-awarded actor, Leonardo di Caprio said that there was a time that he avoided stepping on cracks and other very specific things.

It is true that most people can’t stand living in an untidy house, which is quite normal. But what if you had to repeatedly align all the chairs and tables? What if you had to make sure that there were exactly seven cups in a row in the cupboard? Or you insist on making the middle part of the sofa perfectly squared towards the television? Others obsess on other things like checking if the lights were turned off, which is done not once, but several times throughout the day. There are individuals who actually worry about having knives and other sharp objects at home, thinking that they might hurt someone with these instruments. Even more distracting to the daily routine is the obsession with cleaning one’s hands. Somehow, some people can’t stop themselves from rushing to the bathroom to wash their hands over, and over, and over again. These types of behavior or symptoms of anxiety have been called a lot of names but none seems to fit the bill. People have called it depression, phobia, over-worrying, or panic. More that just being symptoms of stress and anxiety, these actuations point out to a more serious psychiatric condition Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD.

It is true that a little anxiety doesn’t hurt. Anxiety is what some scientists call an evolutionary survival mechanism. There is a big difference between just knowing that a hungry tiger is outside your tent and having enough anxiety to prompt you to flee the potential danger. But how do you know when your stress and anxiety over objects, thoughts, situations, or events are serious enough to be considered as OCD? When a reaction is recurrent, persistent or repetitive — it may be signs of OCD. It is also important to define if a person’s reactions are obsessive or compulsive. An obsession is a recurrent or persistent thought that may not even be related to real-life problems or situations. The obsessive thoughts are intrusive and cause distress on a person. On the other hand, a compulsion is a repetitive behavior that drives a person to act in response to an obsession. These repetitious acts are done by the person to control or manage the stress or perceived danger brought about by the obsession. Clearly, when an obsession or compulsion disturbs a person’s life, causes distress, and takes up ore than an hour per day —- these may be classified under OCD.

In the 14th to 16th centuries, the obsessive-compulsive behavior was actually believed to have been caused by the devil. Recurring sexual, blasphemous and other obsessive thoughts were considered to be the work of the devil and, thus, needed to be cured through exorcism. While many today consider OCD as a psychological disorder, there are scientists who believe that abnormalities in the brain or a streptococcal infection may cause the disorder.

People suffering from OCD have sought anxiety relief by using antidepressant prescriptions. These medications help make serotonin more available in some parts of the brain. Serotonin is a substance inside the brain that helps regulate anger, aggressions, mood, anxiety, and even sexual desire and appetite for food. Fluoxetine, usually sold under the brand name Prozac, has become one of the most commonly prescribed medications for OCD sufferers. For some patients, drugs are needed because of the severity of the condition which is both time-consuming and emotionally draining. Other means of anxiety disorder treatment include behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy, which includes exposure and ritual prevention or ERP.

Indeed, people with obsessive-compulsive disorder cannot ignore or even act their way out of it, even if they are as good as Di Caprio. But with a little attention and professional health care, a OCD sufferer can slowly but surely address this condition and kick off those obsessions and compulsions like Beckham.

For some particular reason, why the vegetables never got eaten was forgotten but not eating them is a common theme among the smaller set.
As we aged the idea of not eating vegetables tended to go out the window, simply because we knew that we should eat vegetables. Unfortunately, the idea and the practice rarely went hand-in-hand. Adults are no less likely to eat their vegetables then they were as a child. They just hide it better by eating them when others were around to appear as healthy eaters. Those often sited “studies”, however, saw through to the true eating habits of adults and reported that, more often then not, youre not eating your vegetables or at least not near enough.

How much to eat

Any reasonable person knows that the government guidelines and those studies are about as realistic as a child forgoing chocolate. The studies indicate the need for 4 cups 9 servings of vegetables per day, based on a person needing 2,000 calories per day. To some this might sound like grazing rather then eating. Unfortunately, the studies do indicate time and again that these nutritional requirements are about the right levels for keeping a body in balance with regard to all the nutrients it needs to function properly.

Which nutrients are important?

All of the nutrients found in vegetables are important in one way or another. Each helps in the functioning of the body. Some, however, are a bit more important for particular body parts then others. All are important; it’s just that some are just more important. As far as the studies are concerned, they tend to look at Potassium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium and Iron as the big ones to think about. There are other nutrients in vegetables that are just as important, but for the average person these are the big ones. Past the nutrients also consider that the Carbohydrates, fiber and proteins found in vegetables are important and things you need to consider in your vegetable and overall diet.

Why eat vegetables?

Consider that eating is like putting gas in your car. You need it to make the car go. Food is the gas for the body. Dont eat it and you won’t go. Any food will do, it’s just that some gas blends are better then others. Put a low grade gas in your tank like McDonalds and eventually the engine is going to start running rough. Put a better grade fuel in your tank and the engine will run smoother without hick-ups. The problem is, every once and a while every engine gets hick-ups. Vegetables are a better grade of gas that helps to prevent hick-ups. From these studies that have been talked about, heart hick-ups are the area where vegetables have proven, through very reliable studies, to prevent hick-ups. There are other hick-ups where some have suggested that vegetables help with preventing hick-ups like cancer, but the very reliable studies cannot say 100, or close to it, that this is so. The heart, however, is very reliably linked to vegetables and heart health.

Which vegetable to eat

Considering the number of vegetables found around the world and the way that they fit into differing regional cultures, it would be fairly difficult to list the seven best or worst vegetables and their nutrient values. What can be done is to pick seven vegetables that might represent seven types of vegetables, with particular nutrient values associated with them.

Leafy greens

This group of vegetables is the absolutely most important type of vegetable that a person could eat for overall health and general heart health. This is a hands down eat it every single day; the darker the leaf the better in a general sense. Heart health is where you will find the most benefit. There are many of these vegetables but Kale is the one most often mentioned from a nutritional, cooking and taste perspective to try. For 100g it has 450mg of potassium, 180 of recommended daily requirements RDR for vitamin A, 200 of RDR of vitamin C, 15 RDR of calcium and 19 of DRR of Iron.

Medium green bell pepper

The green bell pepper is a bit short on its calcium 2 RDR Calcium and 4 RDR of Iron but it is solid in Vitamin C with RDR of 180. Potassium is at about mid-point at 210mg.

3 medium spears Broccoli

Broccoli is also a bit short on Calcium and Iron because of its water composition at 4RDR but is mid-pack on Potassium 300mg and 30RDR vitamin A, at 140 RDR of vitamin C it is a bit higher then other vegetables.

1 medium carrot

Carrots are a good vitamin source for potassium and vitamin A at 270mg of potassium and 270 RDR Vitamin A but low at 2 and 0 for Calcium and Iron respectively.

1 cup butternut squash

Squash is above mid-pack with 4490mg Potassium, 220 RDR Vitamin A, 50 RDR Vitamin C and 6 RDR for Calcium and Iron.

3 medium Roma tomatoes

Tomatoes are big on Potassium at 410mg and lower on other Vitamins and minerals at less then 60RDR.

For those who have a family member or close friend with a chronic mental illness, life can be filled with challenges. Chronic mental illness takes its toll on families, who often don’t have the training or emotional resources to adequately care for their loved ones. It’s difficult to navigate the waters of the legal and mental health care systems, and doubly difficult to find a good home for a loved one with a mental illness who can’t live on his or her own.

Despite a family’s dedication and willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure that their mother, father, brother, or sister receives the care he or she needs, it’s not always clear what housing and care options are available or suitable. Here, then, is a review of six of the most common types of housing and care available for those with a chronic mental illness.

Nursing Homes Because those who are mentally ill sometimes are in need of long-term medical care, there are times when a nursing home might be necessary or appropriate. However, many nursing homes aren’t equipped to adequately address mental health care issues. When selecting a nursing home for a loved one, ensure that it specializes in serving those with chronic mental illness.

Residential Care Facilities Most people with chronic mental illness receive the appropriate level of care in residential care facilities. Typically, they provide 24-hour staffing, room and board, and assistance with medications and scheduling mental health care appointments. These kinds of facilities are generally not locked.

Adult Care Facilities Adult care facilities are more family oriented than residential care facilities, but generally provide the same level of care. They are more appropriate for those whose conditions are stable. Adult care facilities are not locked, and some do not provide 24-hour staffing.

Family Care Homes The family care home setting is more of a typical home in that it serves a much smaller number of residents and is not generally staffed 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, many subsidies for those will chronic mental illness will cover this level of care, even though the individuals may need the services of an adult care or residential care facility.

Assisted Living Units An assisted living unit, as its name implies, is most appropriate for those people who are high functioning and stable. With assisted living, there is minimal staff supervision and residents typically live in apartments and receive services like meals, laundry, and medication supervision. Assisted living can also be a bridge to independent living, in that if someone successfully participates in assisted living for a year, he or she may be able to transition to a traditional apartment.

Psychiatric Units Psychiatric units are either based in or affiliated with hospitals. One type of psychiatric unit specializes in short-term acute care, most often when a person is a danger to himself or herself, or others. The goal in this situation is to stabilize the individual and transfer him or her to another kind of facility. The other type of psychiatric unit is one that is affiliated with a state hospital, and is often a locked facility for those needing longer-term care.

If you feel tired while reading this short article, it is already happening to you…

An estimated 100 million Americans have occasional sleep problems, of which 40 million have so-called “sleep disorders”, and over 75 of the population is walking around deprived of sleep on a daily basis. Studies show it only is getting worse with each passing decade, and there are no signs of the situation becoming any better. In fact, over the past 5 years alone there has been a startling 33 increase in those of us reporting trouble sleeping! Can you imagine what statistics in another decade will be like? Unfortunately, it does not look like we are heading in the right direction. You can read more statistics at the following URL

In our busy, fast-paced society, it seems we are constantly moving, thinking, and trying to get “more” done. The first thing many of us think of doing when we do have so-called “free time” is to catch up on a little TV or do some activity that we have “not had the time to do”, aside from catching up on our sleep. And greater quality and quantity sleep is exactly what most of us really need.

Sleep studies clearly show that not receiving the quality and quantity sleep affects our lives in negative ways, sometimes greatly. It can change the way we see and experience our lives and the world around us in dramatic ways.

Some of the following can help us identify when we might not be achieving enough quality sleep each night

Feelings of tiredness at some point throughout the day
Falling asleep within a few minutes when going to bed
Decreases in levels of intolerance and increased levels of hostility
Reduced ability to concentrate
Slowed reflexes
Impaired judgment
Apathy
Unusual weight gain or loss
Change in body temperatures that lead to feelings of chilliness
Unusual levels of anxiety
Falling asleep when inappropriate
Reduced creativity
Reduced ability to think logically or handle complex tasks
Increased levels of self-consciousness with increased levels of anxiety

If you find any of these attributes apply to you, you might want to sleep a little longer or sounder each night.

Amazingly, one of the quickest ways to improve the quality of our lives and waking hours, as the statistics show, is to simply get a better night’s sleep. It is such a simple answer to such a complex problem.

If you are having troubles falling asleep, there are things you can do that can help you very quickly. Yes, the following might seem obvious to many folks, but sometimes we miss the obvious. So, let’s cover some quick and easy ones first.

Two Things to Avoid Caffeine and Nicotine

Reduce the levels of caffeine used throughout the day. Studies show that people who have insomnia already have a higher metabolic rate typically 9 than those who are sleeping normally. It would take about 4 cups of coffee to raise a normal sleepers metabolism to the same rate. From this metabolic indicator, although the person with insomnia does not feel wide awake and shows all the signs of not achieving enough sleep, we can see that a person who intakes caffeine actually on average is highly physiologically aroused. After all, caffeine is a stimulant!

The short of it…reduce the levels of caffeine intake throughout the day. Obviously, we are not going to say quit totally, even though it can help. Of course, the last thing you want to do is drink the caffeine within a few hours three or more before attempting to go to sleep.

List of items, both food and beverages, that may contain caffeine

Coffee – Brewed drip or percolated, Instant, Many so-called “decaffeinated” coffees
Tea – Brewed drip or percolated, Instant, Many so-called “decaffeinated” coffees
Cocoa
Chocolate Light, Dark, Baker’s, etc. Beverage or Food. This includes hot chocolate milk.
Most Sodas Including “Diet” and “Clear” Sodas – Coke, Diet Coke, Mr. PIBB, RC Cola, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi, Canada Dry, and many others

Next, nicotine intake can have a dramatic affect on our ability to get a good night’s rest. Just like caffeine, nicotine is a stimulant. Smoking is the primary way of ingesting nicotine. Smoking can raise blood pressure, stimulate brainwave activity, and increase heart rate.

Studies have shown that smokers actually have greater difficulties falling asleep and wake more times during the night. It is possible the later is a symptom of withdrawal. And, when people have quit smoking after regularly smoking from 1 to 3 packs of cigarettes a day over at least a two year period of time, studies have clearly found it is easier to fall asleep and sleep more soundly with less awakenings at night.

Obviously people are not going to just quit smoking, as most who have the habit realize how addictive it really can be. So, maybe lessen your smoking intake and only do it a certain points during the day. Try not to have any cigarettes close to bedtime and try, like the case with caffeine, to limit your usage to several hours before bedtime, which can help greatly. If you want to quickly work toward getting a better night’s sleep and you smoke cigarettes, then to quit smoking is one of the quickest ways to help achieve your goal.

Bedroom Sleep Tips!

There are many more things we can do, to achieve a better night’s sleep, including taking a look at different aspects of our bedroom or sleep environments. Many of the following list will be subjective, so you will want to find out by focusing on a few and making small changes through time to what personally works for you.

Bed Sheets comfort… silk may be romantic, but not always practical. Your sheets should “breathe” well.
Room Temperature not too hot and not too cold. Some people find it easier to keep the room cold and wrap up warmly in their bed sheets. If your feet are cold… easy enough… wear socks.
Noise or Sound the less the better, although some people might consider an underlying, constant sound to help with sleep.
Humidity If you find your throat is scratchysore, your skin feels dry, or you have congested sinus passages, it might be because your room is too dry. If you feel warm, sweaty, and moist, you might want to see if there is too much humidity in the room.
Lighting the darker the better.
Drafts some people like a draft, while it bothers others. Keep an eye on this one for sore through or tight chest while sleeping. It might mean you have a draft in the room. If you can, open a window and let in some fresh air, as air can become stale while stagnant.
Cleanliness Ok, simple… keep it clean. This can keep the air fresh and help with sleep.
Bed Equals Sleep Use and associate your bed with sleeping only and not other activities. Read or do you “home” work somewhere else… not in bed. Associating the bed with something like work or even TV can keep us up at night. Associating it with relaxing activities, sleep or even sex, can help us fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly at night.
Clocks the click-click-click of mechanical clocks, the brightness from digital clocks, or just having a clock in front of us can be a distraction. For some, the constant sound of clicking might actually be good for sleep.
Pillows and Mattresses Take your time and find what will work for you. The new memory foam pillows, although sometimes seemingly expensive can be worth every penny. Make sure they are high quality products, high-density approx. 5lbs. per cubic foot memory foam, as there are a lot of cheap, lightweight memory foam pillows on the market today. With your mattress, take your time and make sure you can test run a bed at home, so you can take it back if yours does not work for you.
Biggest sleep tip of all Take your time and BE PATIENT with yourself. See what works best for you. It’s worth the effort. Simply reading each of the above can help make you conscious of ways you might not have noticed in the past, and this will lead to improve your own life, by achieving a better night’s sleep. Take your time and be patient.

These are just a few things about our sleep context that can help us achieve a better night’s sleep and improve the quality of our lives.

As the statistics clearly show, most of us are walking around half awake every day, which means in all probability we are not living a higher quality of life we could be and other areas of our lives can suffer. Both psychical and psychological problems can arise by not achieving enough quality sleep.

Take the above tips and run with them. Take your time, be patient, and find what has helped others and how you can help yourself improve the quality of your life through a better night’s sleep. It’s time stop the growth and reverse America’s easily unnoticed sleep epidemic.

The answer is no! While bad breath is a possible sign of gum disease, other common causes crop up as well. For example, tonsil stones can cause bad breath. Tonsil stones are created when decaying food debris collects in the crevices of the tonsils and becomes compacted into what are referred to as “stones.” You can have bad breath from tonsil stones without having any gum disease at all.

Post-nasal drip can also cause bad breath, as the discharged mucous provides a rich food for the anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath, helping them to multiply rapidly. Again, this sort of bad breath isn’t by itself a sign of gum disease.

However, the most common cause of bad breath is a lack of adequate oral hygiene. Improper brushing and flossing, or simply too little of it, can leave large amounts of plaque still stuck to and growing on your teeth and gums. If this growth is allowed to continue unchecked, the anaerobic bacteria has the opportunity to burrow down beneath the gum line, where they form unwelcome pockets of bacterial colonies, ones that are devilishly hard to reach and clean without the help of specialized tools.

Anaerobic bacteria give off a smell much like sulfur, and it is exactly that smell that’s most closely associated with bad breath. Occasional bad breath may merely be a signal that it’s time to brush again, but persistent or chronic bad breath can be an early warning sign of gum disease.

If you have chronic bad breath as well as tender or inflamed gums, there’s a good chance that you are experiencing some level of gum disease. It’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible to seek treatment, not only for social reasons, but your overall state of health.
